In 2016 I was honored to be part of the remix album for the man I call “RoloDex” but the world knows him as Dexter Story - brilliant musician, arranger, band leader and human being. Released on Soundway Records, “Wondem Remixed” featured remixes by RAS G, T'AMIR, CARLOS NINO, TODD SIMON, AL DOBSON JR. and KUTMAH.
It was fresh making a remix where the melody is in 5/4 time and the rhythm in 4/4. I went in on this with one thing - I wanted the swagger of the drums to sound like a woolly mammoth just got into a fight with a saber tooth tiger, barely won, and was limping away victoriously.
I knew that Dex just came back from Ethiopia where he visited the most holy monolithic church #lalibela. I asked him if he made any field recordings and he sent me the sound of the birds chirping at Lalibela at dawn, which you can hear in the beginning and end. You can also hear the #nyabinghi drums from #CountOssie. I always love playing the #MiniMoog on everything I can, and dex’s head melody was just the right kinda nasty for it.

Brazillian Butta Groove is one one of the most ridiculous drum patterns I've ever heard... The way it floats and breathes with that piano loop is incredible ... Jerome Scott

Love the creative twist on this old school classic. When I first heard it, from the top I was like 'this is a bit out of place' when the the switch kicks in, it's like 'ohh shit!!!
Awesome, fricking awesome. djaitchb
